March 9, 2010 – MOULDING & BOARD MARKET UPDATE

To all ENAP Members,

We have been having increased dialogue regarding the current supply of product coming from Chile and the impact the disaster is going to have on the supply base in the United States going forward. I thought it might be helpful to summarize in writing where we are at this time.

The sudden supply disruptions caused by the February 27th earthquake in Chile created chaos in the moulding, board, and shop blanks industry. Approximately 40% of the North American supply of finger joint pine, solid moulding, and MDF product comes from Chile. This is equivalent to approximately 2,000 containers per month and that supply will now be off the market for an as yet undetermined period of time. All buyers are scrambling for coverage as hundreds of containers awaiting shipment at Chilean ports were lost in the quake. It is projected that exports will be shut down for weeks or even months.

The fullest extent of the damage and impact is yet to be completely understood and is changing daily. The frenzy is focused primarily on items associated with finished finger joint moulding and boards. In addition to the shortage of raw fiber material the significant factor lies in the damage to Chile’s infrastructure. Even if a manufacturer can produce product, currently there is no way to get it to market.

Importers are purchasing whatever fiber they can from Brazil but any alternative source falls far short of replacing the lost volume from Chile. All manufacturers are posting price increases anywhere from 10% – 25%. Along with the price increase all manufacturers are meticulously managing present inventories and evaluating all future orders. Priority will be given to present stocking dealers and all other inquiries will be evaluated after those commitments are honored. ENAP is communicating daily with our vendors and members to stay abreast of the situation.

If you have any questions, please feel please contact your millwork trader.

As always we appreciate your business.
